Today's youth are more likely to get arrested

Many Georgia residents are aware of the large prison population in the U.S. According to a long-running survey representing a crosscut of American society, a greater percentage of younger people have been arrested at least one time than their counterparts in previous generations.

The study was based on a continuing survey that has been ongoing for 50 years. It was conducted by the RAND Corporation, one of the nation's largest public interest research think tanks. The study's results were based on information gathered from 5,000 families over a period of 50-plus years.

The most alarming statistic from the study has to do with the arrest rates of Americans between the ages of 26 and 35. Adults in this age bracket were 3.6 times more likely to have been arrested than people over age 66. One major reason given for the increased arrest rate is more strict law enforcement than in previous times.

The increase in arrests does not seem to be affected by race. Though African Americans were more likely to have seen jail time, white males have shown the highest increase over the life of the study. There are other statistics from the study that are predictable. Those who have been arrested once earn less on average than those who have not been arrested. Those with multiple arrests or convictions for violent crimes earn even less on average. Though the marriage rate for those who have been arrested is increasing, it remains lower than for those without a criminal history.

A criminal conviction will stay on a person's personal record for years unless it's expunged. In some cases, it can remain on a person's record for life. For those who are charged with a crime, a criminal defense attorney is sometimes the only advocate available. Legal counsel could look out for the best interests of a defendant.
